Cherry Hill Mall will add a 120,000-square-foot sporting goods store with a two-story climbing wall, an outdoor athletic field and golf simulators when Dick's House of Sport opens in mid-November.

The timeline comes from 42Freeway, which first reported the opening window on Sunday, Oct. 11. The existing Dick's Sporting Goods on Route 70 has posted closing signs on its windows announcing Wednesday, Nov. 4 as its last day.

That leaves a gap of roughly two weeks.

"I've been unofficially told to expect a mid-November opening," 42Freeway reporter Mark Matthews wrote. "I also have a more specific date for the official grand opening, but I'm waiting for the Dick's team to make its formal announcement."

PREIT, the mall's owner, has called the House of Sport "the largest single-tenant addition to Cherry Hill Mall in more than a decade," according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The two-story store sits behind the mall near JCPenney and the food court, on the site where the former nine-story One Cherry Hill office tower once stood.

Each floor spans about 60,000 square feet. Shoppers can enter from the parking lot or from inside the mall on both levels. Building the upper-level mall connection required a new hallway and the relocation of several retailers, including Famous Footwear, which moved to a second-floor spot next to JCPenney.

The store's signature draw is a two-story climbing wall enclosed in glass, where climbers start on the first floor and scale upward. Outside, a fenced athletic field accessible through the store can host equipment testing, demonstrations and events. At other House of Sport locations, including one in Scranton, Pa., local teams have used the field for scrimmages. The outdoor field can convert to an ice skating rink in winter, according to plans presented at the Cherry Hill Zoning Board's December 2024 hearing that approved the project 6-0.

Matthews wrote that staffing at the new store could reach about 330 employees and that workers from the Route 70 location are expected to keep their jobs. Dick's Sporting Goods has not officially confirmed those figures.

The Cherry Hill Zoning Board unanimously approved signage for the project on Sept. 3. Board member Kevin Cockfield said at that hearing that he believes the store will be a significant economic benefit to Cherry Hill.

The Route 70 store sits in the Market Place at Garden State Park shopping center alongside Wegmans and Home Depot. Its departure will leave a vacancy next to the former Christmas Tree Shops space. Online furniture retailer Wayfair has announced plans for a store at the same center, though that opening is not expected until late 2028, according to the Inquirer.

The Dick's Going, Going, Gone discount outlet at the nearby Plaza at Cherry Hill is not affected and will remain open.

Dick's had a promotional booth at the mall's 65th anniversary celebration on Saturday, Oct. 10, according to the Courier-Post. A formal grand opening date has not yet been announced.
