Seniors at Cherry Hill High School East are showing up to school with Garfield, Spider-Man and princess backpacks slung over their shoulders.
The cartoon-backpack swap has become a tradition among the Class of 2027 at the 2,120-student school, first reported by Brooklyn Gehling in Eastside, the school's student newspaper, on Sept. 29. Students trade their typical bags for brightly colored packs decorated with childhood characters as a lighthearted way to mark their final year.
Senior Samantha Cason chose a Garfield-themed backpack that reflects a bond she shares with her sister. She told Eastside the bag is about "ending my time here remembering something from my childhood."
The tradition has already caught the eye of younger students. Faith Gibson, a member of the Class of 2029, told Eastside she plans to carry the same Minnie Mouse backpack she wore on her first day of school.
The Class of 2027's last day at Cherry Hill East is June 17, 2027, according to the district's academic calendar.
