Route 130 in Gloucester City shuts down in both directions at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, and won't reopen until 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, forcing weekend detours for Cherry Hill drivers who use the north-south corridor through Camden County.

NJDOT spokesperson Elizabeth Rose Galamba announced the full closure Thursday in a traffic advisory, saying Conrail contractors will replace the railroad crossing near Klemm Avenue, installing new concrete crossings and asphalt approaches. The closed stretch runs between Klemm Avenue and the bridge over Newton Creek.

The project is part of NJDOT's federally funded Railroad Grade Crossing Safety Program, which repairs, upgrades or removes about 50 crossings statewide each year.

Detours

NJDOT posted separate detour routes for northbound and southbound traffic. Drivers heading north are directed to stay left toward I-76 westbound, take Exit 2 to I-676 northbound, then Exit 1 to Collings Avenue, and follow signs back to Route 130 North via I-295/I-76/Route 42 and I-676 southbound.

Southbound drivers should take the ramp to Route 168 South/Mount Ephraim, continue on Black Horse Pike/Route 168, turn right onto CR 551 Spur, then right onto Market Street to reconnect with Route 130.

Surrounding roads will carry heavier traffic throughout the weekend. 42Freeway noted the closure could affect connections toward Cherry Hill's Route 38 and Route 70 corridors.

Plan ahead. Access to businesses and properties along the closed segment will be maintained during the work. Gloucester City Police posted local detour information on their Facebook page for residents navigating the immediate area.

NJDOT noted the timing is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Drivers can check 511nj.org for real-time travel updates throughout the weekend.
