A Camden County jury found Miguel A. Mota, 41, of Camden, guilty on 14 counts of child sexual abuse after determining he assaulted two girls who lived in his home over a period stretching from November 2010 to April 2020, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.
The youngest victim was 5 years old when the abuse began.
The Prosecutor's Office said Mota was convicted on four counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, three counts of second-degree sexual assault, three counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, two counts of third-degree aggravated sexual contact, one count of third-degree terroristic threats and one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact.
How the case unfolded
The Camden County Police Department opened its investigation in April 2020 after one of the victims, then living in Mota's house, reported the abuse. Authorities determined Mota had sexually abused her multiple times between November 2010 and April 2020, when she was between the ages of 7 and 16.
Mota was first charged on Wednesday, April 8, 2020.
In July 2024, a second victim who had also lived in the home came forward. The Prosecutor's Office said Mota abused the second girl multiple times between December 2010 and April 2020, when she was between the ages of 5 and 14. Additional charges were filed on July 30, 2024.
Trial and verdict
Both victims testified at trial, according to the Prosecutor's Office. Following the guilty verdict on Monday, July 27, Mota was taken to the Camden County Correctional Facility. He had previously been released on pre-trial monitoring after a detention hearing.
Sentencing is scheduled for Friday, September 25.
