Cherry Hill's high schools are set to get new district-level leadership.

Superintendent Dr. Kwame Morton, Sr. recommended Caroline Steer, a veteran administrator from neighboring Pennsauken Public Schools, as the district's next Director of Secondary Education. The Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the appointment Tuesday.

Steer brings more than 20 years as a teacher, school administrator and district leader. She currently serves as Director of Elementary Education for Pennsauken Public Schools and has also served as that district's Acting Superintendent, according to Morton's letter to the community published Monday.

In those roles, Steer oversaw curriculum and instruction, staffing, federal grant management, professional development and community engagement, Morton wrote. His interview committee praised her ability to connect strategic leadership with the daily needs of individual schools.

Morton wrote that he is confident Steer will be an asset to the district and an effective partner to secondary school leaders.

Filling a vacancy flagged weeks ago

The Director of Secondary Education position has been open for at least several weeks. Community member Ann Einhorn raised the vacancy during public comment at the Board Work Session on Tuesday, June 9, also referencing potential cost savings from leaving the role unfilled. Morton's recommendation would fill it.

The position oversees the district's secondary schools. Cherry Hill High School East and Cherry Hill High School West are the district's two comprehensive high schools. Morton framed the hire as advancing the district's 2025–2030 Strategic Plan.

The nine-member board voted unanimously on consent items at the June 9 meeting. At the most recent work session on Tuesday, July 14, only five members were present.

The board's vote on Steer's appointment is scheduled for the Tuesday meeting. Results were not available at publication time.
