Route 38 is back open after floodwaters shut down the highway at two locations in Cherry Hill on Monday, Aug. 3, the Cherry Hill Police Department confirmed.

The road closed at Kenilworth Avenue and along a stretch from Longwood Avenue to Chapel Avenue, according to Cherry Hill police. NJDOT described the eastern boundary of the closure as Haddonfield Avenue (CR 644). Both closures affected all lanes in both directions, and the New Jersey Department of Transportation posted detour advisories on X for motorists.

The road reopened later Monday.

Part of a wider storm

The flooding on Route 38 was one piece of a larger flash-flood event across the region. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for northwestern Camden County, including Cherry Hill, through 2:45 p.m. Monday. The agency said between 1 and 4 inches of rain had already fallen, with up to 2 more inches possible.

Cherry Hill recorded 1.13 inches of rainfall as of 11:40 a.m. Monday, according to NJ.com's compilation of National Weather Service and Rutgers NJ Weather Network data. Parts of Burlington and Mercer counties saw more than 4 inches by midday.

State transportation officials confirmed Route 38 in Cherry Hill was among several highways affected, alongside Route 30 in Camden and Route 130 in Pennsauken, NJ.com reported. The NJ Transit River Line light rail service was also suspended in both directions in Camden.

Separate from construction closures

The flooding closure is unrelated to the ongoing Camden County road construction project that has closed portions of Kenilworth Avenue and Kresson Road for several weeks. That work involves utility upgrades and is on a separate timeline.

A flood watch for Camden County remained in effect through 11 p.m. Monday, with the National Weather Service warning that additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms could bring rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour. The NWS urged drivers to avoid flooded roadways, warning that most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
