The salad chain that got its start at Cherry Hill Mall turns 40 this year.
Saladworks, which NJBIZ reports opened its first location at the mall in 1986, is marking the milestone with a $6.99 deal on build-your-own salads and wraps every Tuesday through the end of September. NJBIZ describes the brand as the first fresh-tossed salad chain in the country.
Two Tuesdays remain for the deal: Sept. 22 and Sept. 29.
Founder John Scardapane opened the original shop in 1986. Its success led to 12 more locations across New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and the company began franchising in 2001.
The chain has changed hands since. Saladworks filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and was purchased by Centre Lane Partners in 2015. Centre Lane acquired another New Jersey-born brand, Frutta Bowls, out of bankruptcy in 2020 and combined both under a new holding company called WOWorks, now headquartered in Florida.
Saladworks operates 160 locations across North America under the WOWorks umbrella, according to NJBIZ. WOWorks has been pushing a co-branded format that pairs Saladworks with Frutta Bowls under one roof, opening 15 such dual locations over the past four years. The newest opened in Newark in September.
The co-branding push is part of a broader growth spurt. WOWorks CEO Kelly Roddy said in a Sept. 1 press release that the company had opened 23 new restaurants so far in 2026, with 15 more in development. Co-branded locations account for nearly half of those openings.
WOWorks is on pace to open about 40 new stores by year's end, up from 24 in 2025, according to Restaurant Dive.
A WOWorks media representative told NJBIZ that efforts are underway to "expand the co-brand footprint through new locations and converting existing locations where it makes strategic sense."
The $6.99 deal applies at participating Saladworks locations through the last two Tuesdays in September.
